Working from home?

Given the numbers of employees across the country who have now been forced to work from home HMRC has set up a simplified way to claim tax relief to compensate for associated higher costs such as increased heating or electricity charges. You’re eligible even if you’ve had to work from home one day in the tax year and the relief could save you between £60-£125 a year in the form of tax relief (in the form of a tax code adjustment).

The best news is HMRC have simplified the process and so it only entails an online form which takes about 3 minutes to fill in and you’re not required to keep any documentation such as receipts.

We’ve even included the steps within the form and what your answers may be;

For the purpose of this post we’re assuming this is a yes. If you wanted to claim more get in touch, the process may be a touch more complicated but you could be saving even more money.

If you’re already completing a self assessment you could put these expenses in and so the form may not be for you, lots of employees however aren’t and so you’d likely be putting in no here.

You can’t claim the relief if your employer is already paying your working from home expenses.

At this point you’ll be asked to sign in or sign up for a government gateway – it takes a minute and these will just be your sign in credentials with HMRC. Then you’ve got some very straight forward questions on when you started working from home etc. We think this will only take 3-5 minutes, so is likely the quickest saving you’re going to make this year. Any trouble or any other questions drop us a message and we’re happy to help!
